A diamond's value is based on Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat. For everyday jewelry, prioritize a good cut and clarity with no inclusions visible to the naked eye.
Colored stones — sapphire, ruby, emerald
Color and saturation determine appeal; origin and treatment (heating, oiling) impact price and longevity.

Care and precautions
Cleaning and impacts
Each stone has its fragilities: emerald is less resistant to shocks, diamond is hard but can be scratched by other diamonds. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush; avoid ultrasonic for some treated stones.
